CBD Oil for Autism: What You Need To Know

When we discuss autism as a condition, we’re truly discussing an extreme range of disorders though a few comparable conditions which also fall under the same umbrella, like Asperger’s syndrome, Hyperactivity and attention deficit etc. Autism is an unfortunate neurodegenerative disorder and an exact reason behind this disorder is still unknown. But some researchers believe that autism is caused by mutations on some specific rare genes. This disorder disables the patient’s natural social communication, activity, interaction and patients often show repetitive behaviors. No known cure for autism exists, only it’s symptoms and after effects can be controlled and reduced by behavioral treatment and doctor recommended drugs. But in most cases the drugs used in traditional treatment of autism cause severe side effects.

This disorder starts to develop in childhood, so parents of autistic children really feel that the daily struggles caused by these drugs have very little impact on the symptoms of autism and virtually have no significant solutions for social communication and interaction problems faced by autistic people. The available drugs are also not suitable for all children. So, day by day the number of concerned parents are increasing and choosing CBD for help especially after watching CNN’s story on Charlotte Figi in 2013.

What is Cannabidiol or CBD

Cannabidiol—CBD—is a cannabis compound that has remarkable medical and recreational benefits, but does not make people feel “High”.  It can actually prevent  the psychoactivity of THC. Cannabidiol is one of at least 113 active cannabinoids identified in cannabis. It is a major phytocannabinoid, accounting for up to 40% of the plant’s extract. The fact is that CBD-infused cannabis strains are non-psychoactive or less psychoactive than THC-dominant strains. It’s making CBD products a good option for patients looking for relief from inflammation, pain, anxiety, epilepsy, autism and cancer.

How CBD Oil Can Help in Autism

We know there is no cure discovered for autism yet. So the autism treatment means actuality the treatment of major symptoms of autism.  The following are the most  common symptoms and disorders that create the core effects like deficiency in social interaction and communication, as well as repetitive behavior for autism patients.

Anxiety and Depression

Anxiety and depression are very common in autistic people both young and adult patients. Scientist proved that CBD is an ideal natural anxiolytic agent has been known to successfully treat both anxiety and depression. Generally both symptoms go hand in hand. CBD works in the following ways.

CBD interlocks the webs the 5-HT1A receptors found on our Endocannabinoid system which is responsible for reducing anxiety and stress. It also prevents our natural negative response to stress without any side-effects [1]. CBD makes the serotonin levels high by decreasing serotonin reabsorption in the brain.  Higher serotonin levels increases the feelings of happiness and well-being.

CBD reduces anxiety and depression-like behaviors by triggering a mechanism named as hippocampal neurogenesis which increases growth of new cells in the hippocampal area of our brain, through activation of the CB1 and CB2 cannabinoid receptors [2].

CBD has a prohedonic effect which keeps our mind clam and reduces negativity.

Hyperactivity and Attention Deficit With CBD Oil

Autism and ADHD (Attention Deficit and Hyperactivity Disorder) also known as ADD (Attention Deficit Disorder) are firmly related and both share the same symptoms. In both cases patients suffer from a disability in social activity and focusing/attention disorder.

Studies show that CBD is potentially effective in these conditions normally observed in an ADD/ADHD and autism patient. CBD works in these conditions by decreasing hyperactivity and expanding the ability to focus. People with ADD/ADHD normally have higher levels of cortisol which is responsible for feeling mental stress and low levels of dopamine which is responsible for feeling good. CBD decreases the amount of cortisol and its reaction rate with dopamine receptors, by seducing serotonin receptors in the brain. As a result of this phenomenon the overall effects of ADHD/ADD is reduced [5].

Bipolar Disorder

Bipolar disorder and autism, both are so closely connected that around 27% of autism patients experience Bipolar Disorder. Bipolar Disorder is the partial result of an imbalance of our endocannabinoid system (ECS). ECS is responsible for many of the brain’s activity controlling our mood and behavior. Recent studies have shown that an imbalanced ECS triggers mood-related disorders like depression or bipolar disorder.  CBD helps to regain the lost balance of autism patients ECS by activating and boosting the CB1 and CB2 receptors in ECS. By this way CBD works as a natural mood-stabilizer and antipsychotic alternative to patients [3].

Sleep Disorders

Many autism patients go through frequent problems of shortage of sleep as a result of melatonin imbalance.  For the relaxing and calming properties of CBD, its effect on sleep is very beneficial. CBD can increase our average sleep time by controlling the sleep-wake cycle. By taking a balanced dose CBD has no sedative side effect and keeps you alert during the day [4].

Epileptic Seizure Disorders

Around 30% of autism patients experience seizures regularly. Traditional medications used for treating epileptic Seizure causes severe negative side effects and doesn’t reduce the autistic symptoms. On the other hand CBD has magical advantages on treating both seizures and other autistic symptoms without showing any negative side effect. Recently CNN broadcasted a documentary on a 13 years old girl named Charlotte Figi. She was suffering from a rare form of epilepsy called as Dravet Syndrome. Due to this syndrome she experienced extreme seizures from the age of 2 years. Day by day she came to a stage where she had around 300 seizures in a day. Her parents tried so hard to save her but failed. Eventually her parents made a last try with CBD oil and it worked and her seizures are nearly stopped.

CBD is Completely Safe for Children?

CBD is completely safe for both children and adults because it doesn’t contain any psychoactive or sedative properties and most importantly it is not addictive. In fact CBD decreases addiction for other drugs day by day.

Final Words

In past few years many scientific studies on Autism and CBD gave the evidence confirming CBD as a potentially effective treatment for autism and its symptoms. Today it becomes the final hope for the parents of autistic patients and no one can deny the healing effects of CBD for autism patients. So it is time for US politicians and pharmaceutical syndicates to pay attention and save lives.
